General engineering polymer
PETG

PETG: The dependable baseline for robust, dimensionally stable functional parts.

PETG balances strength, chemical tolerance, low warpage and straightforward processing. It is often the rational first choice for housings, guards, brackets and prototypes that do not need outdoor-grade UV stability or high-temperature performance.

The engineer’s read.

Material family names are not specifications. This page anchors the discussion to a named commercial grade and published printed-specimen data, then translates that data into practical selection and design guidance.

What it brings

PETG balances strength, chemical tolerance, low warpage and straightforward processing. It is often the rational first choice for housings, guards, brackets and prototypes that do not need outdoor-grade UV stability or high-temperature performance.

Selection verdict

Choose PETG when reliability, finish and cost matter more than maximum stiffness or heat resistance.

Printed properties.

Orientation, conditioning and geometry can move finished-part performance materially. Use these figures to compare candidate materials—not as guaranteed minimums.

XY values normally represent flat-printed specimens. Z-direction strength can be substantially lower. Final production settings should be qualified on representative geometry.

Selection logic.

A useful material choice starts with load case, temperature, environment, duty cycle and failure consequence—not the strongest number on a datasheet.

Advantages

  • Low shrinkage and good dimensional repeatability
  • Useful resistance to water, dilute acids and many oils
  • Good layer bonding and practical impact tolerance
  • Clean surface finish for functional presentation parts

Watch-outs

  • Not the first choice near sustained heat above roughly 60°C under load
  • Standard PETG is not the preferred long-term outdoor polymer
  • Can creep under sustained load; design generous sections and avoid permanent spring stress
